Sighting on 8/3/97 by journalist and others of triangular object with lights in vicinity of the former Home Secretary's estate in Kent. Inquiries with RAF HQ 11/18 Group found no evidence of "unauthorised military activity in UK Air Defence Region" in the Folkestone area at the time. However RAF West Drayton impounded a radar tape covering the area/time in question for the inquiry. The Home Office considered "there was no security alert at Mr Howard's home on 8 March at the time in question." RAF conclude there was "no substance" to the story. File includes newspaper cuttings and MoD statement on the incident dated 4/7/97.

schema 18h55 8 9 mins Elongated tube-shaped UFO with beam of light reported from Bow, London, in direction of Canary Wharf, 31/5/97 with sketch. MoD received no other reports from London that night. My first thought was that it was a silver child's balloon but upon closer inpsection i realised it was no such thing. i immediately called out to ... the object was slowly beginning to gain altitude and was moving very slowly in a southerly direction towards the canary wharf tower. there seemed to be some kind of light beam emanating from the lower sectin of the object  this light beam must have been very powerful indeed as the sky was extremely  clear and the sun was still visible but the most unusual about the light beam was thaat it appeared to stop dead and gradually fade away as on would normally expect . the beam extended roughly two to three lenghts of the objects's lenght that as cigar shaped and sligthly conical.it also appeared to hever vertically instead of horizontallY. object continued toi gain altitude until itwas but a fatin speck before disappearing. three witnesses
